HYDERABAD: A 25-year-old woman techie committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in her hostel room in upscale Gachibowli area late on Tuesday evening.
She took the extreme step after the software company she was employed with had downsized her along with a few other employees.
Pogaku Harini, a junior software developer working in Golden Hills Capital India Private Limited in Hi-Tec City, was found hanging by her roommate, said Raidurgam police.
She did not leave any suicide note, but police recovered a diary where she had written, ‘Please donate my organs’.
A native of Mahbubnagar district, Harini worked in the company for almost two-and-a-half years.
“She and six other employees were served notices a few days ago as part of the management’s decision to downsize staff. The management served the notices to all those individuals who were drawing a high salary and they were told to leave,” said Raidurgam sub-inspector Saidulu.
Ever since she received the lay-off notice, Harini had been depressed and feared that she may remain unemployed. When she confided about her fears to her friends and family members, they advised her not to feel dejected. Instead, they told her to start looking for another job.
“Harini’s roommate returned from office On Tuesday evening and found that the light was turned off. When she went in, she found Harini’s body hanging from the ceiling,” said the police.
Harini’s father is a headmaster at a school in Mahbubnagar. He last met his daughter on Friday, when she had gone home to meet her family members. After meeting and staying with them for a couple of days, Harini returned to Hyderabad on Monday.
