A disaster response team is currently recovering the wreckage of a saloon car that plunged into Cheploch gorge along Iten-Kabarnet road last night.

The car was headed towards Kabarnet town. The 100-metre deep gorge is infested with crocodiles and is famous for its dare-devil divers.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander John Mwinzi has told Standard Digital that it had one occupant.

Mwinzi said the occupant was reportedly drinking with his friend at a hotel located along the steep Iten-Kabarnet road and the friend left the hotel before him.

"We suspect that he sped to catch up with his friend who had left the hotel earlier. Recovery efforts are underway," Mwinzi said.

He said the police have received reports that one of the two friends works for a popular TV station but it is still unclear which media house it was.
