PATNA: Tension has gripped Kosi diara (riverine belt) following the murder of a former mukhiya Satto Yadav allegedly by the members of notorious Parmanand Yadav gang in Darbhanga district in the wee hours of Thursday.
The deceased Satto’s son Kajal Yadav, a resident of Mahisi police station area in neighbouring Saharsa district, is virtually running a parallel administration in the diara belt of Saharsa, Darbhanga and Samastipur.
The incident took place around 2 am when Satto was tilting his agricultural land with a tractor. The assailants owing allegiance to Parmanand gang reached the spot on horses and motorbikes and fired at 55-year-old Satto from close range leading to his instant death.
One of the assailants, however, escaped leaving behind a horse on the spot when the supporters of the deceased chased them. The supporters created a scene when police from the Tilkeshwar police outpost in Darbhanga district reached the spot. The body could be lifted from the spot and sent to the government hospital for postmortem after the intervention of senior police officers. Police sources said that Satto, a resident of Dhanaut Dharampur village under Mahisi police station in Saharsa district, was the former mukhiya of Rajanpur panchayat.
Biraul SDPO Dilip Kumar Jha said that an FIR has been lodged against Parmanand and his 21 accomplices who were absconding after the incident. In the complaint, the deceased’s son Ramsharan Yadav alleged that Parmanand and his associates attacked his father when he was tilting his land in the diara. “My father started tilting the land with the tractor after the driver went to take a rest around midnight. The family owns 40 bighas of land in Kosi diara on the borders of Saharsa, Darbhanga and Samastipur districts,” Ramsharan told police officials.
Police suspected the killing to be a fallout of gang rivalry in the region. “Rivalry between Kajal Yadav and Ramanand Yadav is an open secret. Parmanand is considered close to Ramanand. Several cases of murder, loot and extortion is pending against Kajal with different police stations in Darbhanga district,” the SDPO told this newspaper over phone.
“He said a police team from Darbhanga will soon visit Mahisi in Saharsa to gather more information about the gang led by Parmanand. Empty cartridges recovered from the spot showed that no sophisticated weapons like AK-47 were used in the killing,” the SDPO revealed.
He, however, didn’t rule out the possibility of more killings in days to come. “The two gangs are trying to establish their supremacy in diara area because of its fertile land,” he added. At least a dozen people have been killed in the gang war in the past one decade. Meanwhile, police have failed to make any arrests in Satto Yadav murder case so far.
