SECUNDERABAD: The SCB demolished 50 encroachments on the nalas as part of a massive drive that was launched last month. Following complaints from residents of ward 5 and ward 6 about overflowing drainage water, the SCB launched a drive to pull down illegal structures. After conducting a survey, the engineering department found that many residents had constructed illegal compound walls and parking lots on nalas.
There are two major nalas – picket nala and Hasmathpet nala — that run through SCB areas and finally enter Hussainsagar lake.
According to engineering department officials, 25 encroachments were demolished in ward 5, 10 in ward 6 and remaining in other wards. “Nearly 400 feet of encroachments was pulled down in Vasavi Nagar, Padmaja Nagar in Karkhana. Many residents had constructed compound walls on the nalas thereby restricting the flow of drainage water,” said B Balakrishna, additional engineer, ward 5.
Few encroachments were also identified in Sripuri Colony, where residents constructed makeshift storerooms, toilets and cement structures illegally on the nalas. In ward 6, SCB pulled down illegal structures in Parkview Enclave, Philips godown, Bolarum and Bowenpally. “Godowns and commercial units dump plastic waste in nalas thereby clogging them. After removing encroachments, we will take up widening of nala,” added Balakrishna.
The SCB also demolished a parking lot which was built over an open drain near Krupa Community Hall in Marredpally. It was being used to park nearly 40 vehicles by owners of three residential apartments in the vicinity.
