JALPAIGURI: Two men transporting cows were lynched on suspicion of cattle-lifting at Putimari Fuleswari village, around 30km from Cooch Behar town, in the early hours of Thursday.
Prakash and Rabiul were passing through the village with two cows in a pickup van, which did not have any registration number, when they were stopped by villagers. Dissatisfied by their answers, the villagers made them step out of the van and set it on fire.
The duo was then beaten up with lathis, bamboo sticks and rods.
By the time the Kotwali police arrived, the two were grievously injured. The cops rushed them to Cooch Behar Medical College and Hospital, where they died.
Cooch Behar SP Santosh Nimhalkar Uttam Rao said they have started a probe and have detained 12 people in this connection.
The police later identified the victims from identity cards they found in their pockets. Both of them hailed from Okrabari in Dinhata.
Two cases of lynching and several attempted lynchings were reported from the tea belt of the Dooars in July. The local police had done an extensive awareness campaign to curb repeats. Cattle smuggling, too, is a huge problem in this belt, thanks to the porous border with Bangladesh.
