2020 property taxes could be affected by homestead status

InForum News Brief FSA

MOORHEAD — Home purchase, moving or household changes may impact 2020 property taxes and eligibility for property tax refund, according to a news release from the city of Moorhead.

If you purchased or moved into a property in the last year, contact your assessor's office to file a homestead application if you or a qualifying relative occupied the property as a homestead on or before Dec. 1, 2019. Qualifying relatives include a child, grandchild, sibling or parent of the owner or owner's spouse. For residential property owner's aunt, uncle niece or nephew are also included.

Applications must be turned in before Dec. 15, 2019, for homestead status for taxes payable in 2020. Once homestead is granted, annual applications are not necessary unless requested by the assessor.

Contact the assessor's office by Dec. 15 if the use of the property you own or occupy as a qualifying relative has changed during the last year.

If you sell, move, or no longer qualify for the homestead classification, assessors must be notified within 30 days of the change in homestead status.
