AURANGABAD: A 19-year-old student has been cheated of Rs 22,000 by a conman on an online marketplace after the former showed interest in buying a mobile phone posted for sale by the latter.
The cybercrime police have once again appealed to the citizens to exercise utmost precaution while dealing with known as well as unknown people online. An offence of cheating and criminal breach of trust has been registered in this regard against unidentified conman with Cidco police station.
The complainant has been identified as Vedant Amrut Wagh, a resident of Cidco N-7 in New Aurangabad.
The youth, while surfing the internet, came across a profile of the conman offering an expensive mobile phone at a comparatively cheaper rate.
After Wagh showed interest in purchasing the cellphone, the conman asked for his phone number. Following this, the conman called Wagh and informed him that he works in the army. To win his trust, the suspect even shared a forged identity card with the complainant.
“The youth trusted all the proof provided by the suspect and agreed to buy the phone. He even deposited the amount in phases, but received nothing in return. Soon Wagh realized that he has been taken for a ride after which he reported the incident with the police,” a police officer said, adding the incident occurred in September.
