KOLKATA: An organisation distributing blankets among the destitute near Bongaon railway station on Friday evening chanced upon a middle-aged man from Madhya Pradesh suffering from possible dementia. With help from amateur radio buffs, they managed to trace Kamala Singh’s family to Anuppur district of MP and inform them about his condition. Singh’s family is on their way to Bongaon to take him back.

“Around 9.45pm, I received a call from Rudra Prasad Ghosh of Ananta Drishti Foundation, the organisation distributing the blankets in Bongaon. They came across Singh while jotting down the names of those who would be getting the blankets and suspected something amiss when he spoke in Hindi. On being asked, Singh said he was from MP. They realised that there was no reason for him to be in Bongaon and asked for his address. Details provided by him didn’t match and Ghosh got in touch with us so we could help,” Ambarish Nag Biswas, secretary of the West Bengal Radio Club.
Biswas and his friends circulated Singh’s photograph to radio operators in MP and around 1am, his family was located. It was found that his younger brother is the sarpanch of Badikhar village.
“By then Singh was admitted to Bongaon Hospital. On Saturday morning, his relatives got in touch with us. Singh had apparently left home over a year ago and forgotten many details,” Nag Biswas said.
