BAREILLY: A 16-year-old girl who was raped and set on fire by her neighbour succumbed to burns on Saturday at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The girl had sustained 80% burns and struggled for nine days before she died.
The horrific crime was committed on November 21 under Nakhasa police station limits of Sambhal district. The teen girl, who had sustained 80% burns, was immediately referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after providing first aid at the community health centre.
Additional superintendent of police Alok Jaiswal said that they had managed to nab the accused, Zishan (30), within a few hours of the crime.

“Zishan had been residing at the same locality where the girl used to live in a house with her mother and a sister. Her father had passed away few years ago. Her mother and sister had gone to market to buy medicine when the accused barged into the house finding her alone,” the ASP said.
In her police complaint, the victim’s mother had said that she found the accused raping her daughter when she reached home. When she raised alarm, the accused caught hold of a kerosene can and poured it all on the girl. Before running away, he set her afire as the woman and her other daughter watched in horror.
Station house officer Devendra Singh Dhama said, “She was provided the best medical facility but could not survive as she was badly burnt.”

The ASP said that the case would be taken to a fast track court to ensure that the culprit gets maximum quantum of punishment at the earliest. “We have added section 302 (murder) of IPC in the FIR and also initiated the process to impose NSA on the accused. Besides, the investigating officer is instructed for a swift probe, so that it could be brought on trial as soon as possible,” the police officer said.
Meanwhile, the administrative officials said that they would ensure that the victim’s family is covered under the state’s Rani Laxmi Bai scheme to provide them monetary compensation.
