Debt drives 3 of family to suicide in Namakkal district

The Velagoundanpatti police registered a case and are investigating.

NAMAKKAL: Mounting debts tragically pushed three members of a family of Koothampatti panchayat near Tiruchengode in Namakkal district to commit suicide, police said here on Monday.

The head of the family Mohan, 55, a rig owner involved in drilling activities, his wife Nirmala, 47, and their 17-year-old daughter, Sowmya, had allegedly consumed some poisonous substance at home in the wee hours of Monday, when Mohan's elder son, Naveen Kumar, 25, had been to Sholapur on business work.

Police said, Sowmya just after consuming the poisonous pill had rung up her uncle, Anbazhagan, and informed that the three of them had consumed the pills already.

A shocked Anbazhagan rushed to their house when he found that Nirmala was already lying dead, while Mohan and Sowmya were struggling for their lives. Anbazhagan rushed the other two persons to a private hospital, but his brother Mohan died on the way and Sowmya died later in hospital not responding to treatment.

The Velagoundanpatti police registered a case and are investigating. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Mohan, who was doing quite well as a rig owner, had diversified into other trades and over a period of time his debts mounted with all his businesses reportedly making losses. Unable to repay his loans, a disheartened Mohan decided to commit suicide along with his immediate family members, police said.
