PATNA: A day after a woman was shot and burned after allegedly gang-raped, another half-burned body was found in a tobacco field in Samastipur district on Wednesday. The woman in her late 20s had bangles on her wrists and red dye (alta) applied to her feet, indicating that she was married.
Some women of Damdari Chaur under Warisnagar police station area in Samastipur spotted the body early Wednesday morning.

Samastipur SP Vikash Burman said the body had no external injury marks and prima facie it seems she was killed somewhere else and her body was burned there to conceal the woman’s identity. The medical board which conducted the postmortem is likely to submit report on Thursday. “Only then we can say whether she was raped or not. Forensic experts have collected samples for further investigation in the case,” he told TOI over phone.
Warisnagar police station SHO Prasunjay Kumar said it was a suspected case of poisoning before setting the body on fire. “A piece of cloth doused with inflammable liquid was put on her face to immolate the body. Her face was charred beyond recognition. The neighbouring police stations have been alerted to report about any missing woman,” the SHO said.
The SHO said the nearest village from the spot was at least one kilometre away. “No four-wheeler could reach the spot. None of the villagers had spotted any suspicious movement at night,” he said.
“A team of forensic experts from Muzaffarpur preserved the viscera for further investigation after postmortem,” he said.
This is the second such incident in the state within 24 hours. On Tuesday, the charred body of a woman was recovered from Kukudha village under Itadhi police station area in Buxar district. The doctor who conducted the postmortem indicated that the woman in her early 20s was gang-raped before being shot in her head and burned. The postmortem report in Buxar case is also awaited.
