Abandoned Kirkwood Motel Building to Be Torn Down

A flood-damaged motel complex in the town of Kirkwood that's been unused for several years is about to be demolished.

The old Travel Inn at 771 Upper Court Street will be torn down by Gorick Construction Company.

The property previously was a Super 8 Motel that housed Jed's Roadhouse bar.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said work on removing the abandoned building is scheduled to start next week.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Garnar said the project will remove a "big eyesore" on one of the major gateways to the county.

The county executive said Gorick will handle the demolition job in exchange for getting ownership of the property. The site is just west of Colesville Road near an interchange for Interstate 81 and Route 17.

There apparently are no specific plans for the property after it has been cleared.

A notice posted at an entrance to the building indicated Sunstream Corporation of Binghamton has started removing insulation that contains asbestos ahead of the demolition project.
