PATNA/BUXAR: Even as the Buxar police announced a reward of Rs.50,000 to those giving information about the killers of the young woman whose charred body was recovered from Itadhi police station area on Tuesday morning, local traders observed bandh on Thursday as a mark of protest over the gruesome incident.
The announcement came after the SIT failed to get any clue in the case even after three days of the incident.
“Those giving any vital information about the deceased’s identity or the killers will be rewarded with Rs.50,000. The identity of the informer will be kept secret,” Buxar SP Upendra Nath Verma said.
DIG, Shahabad range, Rakesh Kumar Rathi, who is still camping at Buxar, said the identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained. “A 12-member SIT headed by a DSP rank officer has been set up to crack the case at the earliest,” Rathi said adding that he was monitoring the police operation.
He said an FSL team from Patna collected evidences from the spot where the charred body of the woman in her early 20s was lying after being shot in the head. “The forensic report is awaited. The FSL report will reveal whether the deceased was raped before being shot from close range,” he told this newspaper.
On Wednesday, village chowkidars across the districts were paraded to identify the body but in vain. An investigating officer said the chowkidars, who happen to be informers of the state government at the grass roots level had been asked to collect information about women in the age group of 20 and 25 missing from their jurisdiction recently.
On the other hand, the local shopkeepers observed bandh on Thursday to vent their ire. “Criminal activities have shot up in the district close to Uttar Pradesh in recent months and police have virtually surrendered before anti-socials,” alleged an RJD functionary Tej Bahadur Yadav at a meeting held at Garh Chowk in Dumraon on Thursday.

Though there was no reports of any clash between the protesters and the police, the situation in the district headquarters town remained tense for the third consecutive day on Thursday. “Anger against police for their failure to check crime is writ large on every face here. People are feeling insecure as the law and order has virtually collapsed in the district,” alleged another RJD functionary Birendra Singh, a resident of Dhansoi village in Buxar district.
ABVP activists also took out a protest march in the town to press for their demand of arrest of the accused at the earliest. Later, a delegation of the organization led by Dipak Yadav met the SP and handed over a memorandum demanding arrest of the accused. Santoo Tiwary, a member of ABVP state working committee, demanded speedy trial of the case in a fast track court after the arrest of the accused.
