THANE: The forest department has decided to postpone a newborn leopard’s reunion with its mother till his health improves.
Experts said he had been out in the cold for almost 12 hours for two consecutive nights, which resulted in infection and reduction in body temperature. “The cub suffered from hypothermia, so our medical team immediately started hot fomentation.
He has chest infection and is under observation,” said Dr. Shailesh Pethe, wildlife veterinarian at SGNP. The department said the 10-14 dayold cub’s health was likely to deteriorate as he was fragile when rescued.
“After consultations with forest department and other experts, a decision was taken to not attempt a reunion now,” said a forest official. The authorities confirmed that on Thursday night neither the leopard came near the basket, where the cub was kept, nor any feline was sighted nearby. “Officials waited till 4am, but unlike on Wednesday night, no leopard was sighted,” said Anwar Ahmed, chief conservator of forest, SGNP.
