Kanpur: Gang-raped by three, teen ends life

KANPUR: Close on the heels of a gang-rape survivor being burnt alive by her tormentors in Unnao, a 17-year-old girl ended her life in the city after being harassed by village goons, who had allegedly raped her in Kanpur Dehat in November.
She hanged herself on Friday night at her cousin’s home in Kanpur Nagar. A resident of Kanpur Dehat, she had come to her cousin’s place three days ago following harassment by her tormentors.Her family alleged police inaction as the reason behind her death.
The girl was kidnapped on November 13 and recovered on November 16. Instead of lodging an FIR under relevant sections of rape and physical abuse, the police had registered a case under section 363 (kidnapping) and section 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing a woman to compel her for marriage) of IPC, people of her village alleged.
After her suicide, Kanpur Dehat police on Saturday added IPC section 376 (rape) to the FIR, which was lodged on November
16. While the police have arrested two accused, Sunny and Lala, Rinku is on the run.
Kanpur Dehat police on Saturday got the victim’s autopsy done, which confirmed hanging as cause of death. “She was abducted by Sunny, Lala and Rinku on November 13 and recovered on November 16. They had abused her physically. On November 16, police lodged an FIR on our complaint but omitted section 376 of IPC. On Saturday, police arrested two men who had raped our daughter,” said a close family member. The girl in her statement to the police had said she was held captive for 3 days and was gangraped by three men, he added.
SP, Kanpur Dehat, Anurag Vats said, “An FIR under sections 363 and 366 of IPC was lodged on the basis of the complaint of her father on November 16. Three days later, when she was recovered, we got her medically examined and her statement was recorded. The girl ended life on Friday.”
