College hockey: UMD battles Wisconsin but Badgers sweep

A three-goal second period helped Wisconsin blunt UMD's upset bid and the Badgers tacked two empty net goals in the final minute for a 5-2 win on Saturday in Madison.

The Bulldogs fell to 8-8-2 overall and 4-6-2-1 in the WCHA while the top-ranked Badgers improved to 18-1-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the league and sit two points back of leader Minnesota (33).

The Bulldogs are now off until playing host to the Minnesota Cup on Jan. 4-5 at Amsoil Arena .

On Saturday, UMD's Gabbie Hughes scored on assists from Ashton Bell and Anna Klein for a 1-0 leadt at 5:55 of the first.

But Wisconsin's Sophie Shirley scored the first of her two goals at 20 seconds of the second and Maddie Rowe scored about six minutes later for a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs' Sydney Brodt took a feed from Hughes to tie the game at 7:42 of the second, but the Badgers' Britta Curl scored on the power play at 9:28 to reclaim the lead.

Shirley and Alexis Mauermann scored empty net goals at 19:24 and 19:40.

  • Taylor Thompson scored twice and Lexi Thomeczek stopped 30 shots as St. Scholastica defeated St. Norbert 4-0 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.

Thompson scored unassisted at 15:31 of the first and Greta Nundahl scored just more than two minutes later on assists from Kayla Kasel and Sam Gorecki.

Courtney Bloemke scored unassisted late in the third period to make it 3-0 and Thompson scored an empty net goal with three seconds left in the game.

The Saints improved to 3-5 overall and take on cross-bridge rival Wisconsin-Superior at 7 p.m. Friday at Mars Lakeview.

  • No 6-ranked Adrian exacted revenge for St. Scholastica's upset win the night before, scoring four first-period goals in a 5-1 win over the Saints on Saturday in Adrian, Mich.

The Bulldogs (7-2-1, 6-2-0) scored three goals in the first eight minutes, and five players scored their goals. St. Scholastica (4-6-1, 3-4-1) avoided the shutout when Michael Talbot scored a power play goal on assists from Kyle Star and Carson Rose at 13 seconds of the second period.

The Saints play host to Gustavus at 7 p.m. Friday before breaking for the holidays.

  • Logan Nelson scored two goals to lead Wisconsin-Stout to a 4-2 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday at Stout.

After Stout took a two-goal lead in the first, UWS scored a pair in the second but couldn't get all the way back.

The Yellowjackets' Dylan Johnson and Andrew Durham scored goals and Jordan Martin and Colton Nelson had assists. The Yellowjackets fell to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.
