‘Game of Thrones,’ Robert De Niro, ‘Veep’ snubbed in Golden Globe nominations

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

The Mother of Dragons and company got burned by Golden Globes voters — and they’re not the only ones.

“Game of Thrones” was among the snubs when the nominations for next month’s award show were announced Monday in Beverly Hills, as the fantasy series was only named a finalist in one category in the show’s final year of eligibility.

Here are some of most notable omissions by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the 2020 Golden Globes, which take place Jan. 5 at the Beverly Hilton, and honor excellence in both film and TV.

Robert De Niro

The Manhattan-born star’s latest movie, “The Irishman,” was well-represented with five nominations, but De Niro surprisingly is not among the contenders for best actor in a drama. His co-stars, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, both scored nominations for best supporting actor in a drama, while Martin Scorsese is up for best director. “The Irishman” is also nominated for best drama film.

Noah Baumbach

“Marriage Story” led the nominations with a whopping six, but Baumbach is not nominated for best director. The comedy-drama is, however, a finalist for best drama film, while Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern each received acting nominations.

“Game of Thrones”

Kit Harington, who played brooding hero Jon Snow, accounted for the wildly popular HBO series’ lone nomination, with a nod for best actor in a drama series. That means “Game of Thrones” wasn’t nominated for best drama series, while Peter Dinklage — who won the Emmy for best supporting actor earlier this year — didn’t get recognized either. Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams and Gwendoline Christie also got shut out.

“Veep”

Like “Game of Thrones,” the long-running “Veep” is in its final year of eligibility. Unlike “Thrones,” the political satire didn’t even receive one nomination. It’s a far cry from the days when star Julia Louis-Dreyfus received a nod at five consecutive Golden Globes from 2013 to 2017.

Lupita Nyong’o

The Oscar winner played two parts — a family matriarch and her freaky doppelganger ? in Jordan Peele’s super creepy horror film “Us,” but Nyong’o was left off the list of nominees nonetheless.

Adam Sandler

Long known for his comedy, Sandler is earning rave reviews and early Oscar buzz for his performance as a jeweler addicted to gambling in the upcoming crime flick “Uncut Gems.” However, he’s not one of the Golden Globes’ five finalists for best actor in a drama.

Greta Gerwig

Gerwig won a Golden Globe in 2018 when her solo directorial debut, “Lady Bird,” took home the award for best musical or comedy film. She has “Little Women” this time around but was left out in a best director field that only features male filmmakers.

“When They See Us”

Ava Duvernay’s limited series about the Central Park Five garnered critical acclaim and shed a light on the five men who were wrongfully convicted in 1989 in connection with the assault and rape of a female jogger. Actor Jharrel Jerome won an Emmy for his performance in the series about race and injustice, but “When They See Us” was shut out entirely by Golden Globe voters.
