Naby Keita heroics prove he can be capable Liverpool deputy for Fabinho

Liverpool continued their fine form with a 3-0 demolition of Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

The Reds secured the victory thanks to goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are eight points clear of Leicester City at the top of the Premier League; with 14 points separating them from the reigning champions Manchester City.

One man who offered a timely reminder of his qualities on Saturday was goalscorer Keita.

The Guinean has had some rotten luck with injuries since arriving at Liverpool in 2018. He missed the back end of last season through a groin injury and various niggles have restricted his game time during 2019/20.

With Fabinho facing a spell on the sidelines, Liverpool need Keita now more than ever. His performance at Bournemouth suggested that he is determined to win his place back on a regular basis.

The 24-year-old was named Man of the Match by football statistics website, Who Scored.

They cited his goal and assist but also drew attention to a 95% pass success ratio, three tackles and he regained control of the ball for Liverpool no fewer than eight times.

Keita has come under fire from some Liverpool supporters.

Having cost £48 million (BBC Sport) from Red Bull Leipzig some people had expected a better start to his Anfield career.

Alongside his injury problems, there has been some suggestion that he doesn’t impact games enough. There was no sign of that on Saturday and a run of games would now be a bonus for Keita.

The £120,000-a-week (Spotrac) maestro has a little way to go in terms of convincing some of the Liverpool faithful.

If he can start producing as he did on Saturday regularly, however, he will soon blow his critics firmly out of the water.
