MADURAI: The South Gate police have booked seven people from Mumbai for cheating a gold jewellery manufacturing unit owner of Rs 40 lakh.
I Salam, 30, the complainant, who hails from South Perumal Maistry Street, runs a gold jewellery manufacturing unit at Ezhuthanikara Street. He used to often sell gold dust produced at the unit to the accused without taking payment in full as he was in business with them for a long time, police said.
In June, he sold 1.17kg of gold dust worth Rs 42 lakh to Aslam Sheik, Ashutosh Acharya, Asish Achariya, Deepak, Ibrahim Ismail, Thardhi, Haaji and Jetty.
The accused had paid only Rs 2 lakh as advance and took the consignment on the promise that the rest of the money would be paid within a month, police said.
As Salam did not get money even after a month, he approached the accused who kept on buying time. At one point of time they stopped responding. Salam approached the South Gate police and lodged a written complainant.
They were booked under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 380 (theft in dwelling house).
The police are trying to establish contact with the accused to question them, police said.
