BIHARSHARIF: Two dowry-related deaths were reported within 24 hours in Nalanda on Monday. In the first instance, a woman was found hanging at her marital home by her parents, who were alerted by neighbours that she was being beaten up by her husband and her family members, police said.
The incident took place around 11pm on Monday at Satyarganj village under Islampur police station.
The deceased, Shweta Kumari, a resident of Tej Pratap Nagar in Patna, was married to Saurabh Kumar around two years ago.
Islampur SHO Sharad Kumar Ranjan said the woman’s father in his complaint accused his son-in-law Saurabh and his family members often torturing his daughter Shweta for Rs 10 lakh in dowry. “They killed her when we expressed our inability to give the money,” the SHO said quoting the woman’s father.
The police officer said an FIR against six people, including Saurabh Kumar, his father Devendra Nath Sinha and four others had been lodged and raids were on to arrest the accused who are absconding. He said all family members fled the village before relatives of the deceased woman reached the village from Patna on Monday night.
Confirming the incident, Hilsa DSP Imteyaz Ahmad said the body of the deceased has been handed over to her relatives after post-mortem at Biharsharif Sadar hospital on Tuesday.
“Saurabh and his family members beat her to death and later hanged the body to make it look like suicide. They mentally and physically tortured her for Rs 10 lakh dowry,” said a family member of Shweta.
In the second incident, a woman identified as Vibha Devi was found unconscious at her father’s place at Koray village under Deepnagar police station in Nalanda on Monday morning. Her father Mithilesh Kumar took her to Biharsharif Sadar hospital where doctors declared her dead.
In his police complaint, Mithilesh said ever since he got her daughter married to Kundan Kumar of Malsalami in Patna district in 2012, the latter and his family members often thrashed her and demanded more dowry.
“After a quarrel, Kundan took Vibha to his home in Nalanda on Sunday and after feeding her some poisonous substance, he disappeared early on Monday morning” said a police officer. Adding, a case has been lodged against Kundan Kumar and five others.
