University of Denver student Austin Ahlers, left, catches an edge and crashes while skiing down High Street near the campus while being towed by his friends through the fresh snow in Denver on Oct. 29, 2019. Ahlers was not hurt in the crash. He gathered himself and kept on skiing. In the truck, from left, are fellow DU students Henry Herman and Michael Hurwitz. The university had canceled classes because of the snowstorm.

After another trip around the sun, I still believe that I have the best job in the world. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to able to photograph and document the variety of human conditions in our community on a daily basis at The Denver Post.

Professional bull rider Ryan Prophet of Rigby, Idaho, right, bows his head during a tribute to fallen rider Mason Lowe before the PBR Denver Chute-Out finals at the Denver Coliseum during the National Western Stock Show on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. The 25-year-old Lowe died the night before after a bucking bull threw him off and stomped on his chest.

Every day provides a new challenge to try and capture a frame or two that is unique and special, hopefully capturing raw, candid and sometimes emotional moments whether it be seeing joy on a woman’s face dancing at a festival or a heart-wrenching moment of silence before the start of a rodeo to honor bull rider that passed away the night before during competition.

Interesting photo opportunities are everywhere, like a reaction during a routine political watch party, or a fun moment as a man gets his long hair braided at the Renaissance Festival.
Sports is, of course, a big part of our culture and as visual journalists at The Denver Post we are fortunate to have many options to explore in Colorado whether it’s high school, college or the professionals like the Avs, Rockies and Nuggets.

One of my biggest highlights this year, however, was spending time with and photographing a stock car racing family at a few tracks on the eastern plains over the summer. In particular, a 14-year-old young woman, Layne Bellm, who was not old enough to get her driver’s license, but old enough to drive nearly 90 mph around dirt tracks, who incidentally just happened to win a track championship in her division.

Looking forward to another trip in 2020. It ought to be interesting, right?
