GAYA: Magadh University student's union elections will be held in January 2020. Whereas several other universities of the state including Patna University have already conducted elections, MU has lagged behind. According to sources, the Raj Bhawan is keen to hold the polls at the earliest.
For several months, the university remained virtually headless as both the VC Prof Qamar Ahsan and Pro VC KN Paswan were removed from their respective positions.
The VC was sacked following his refusal to resign on the directions of the Chancellor’s office while the Pro VC tendered resignation after being reprimanded for lacklustre performance.
Rajendra Prasad, a Defence Studies specialist, joined the university in September end and soon after taking over he was confronted with admission and exam related problems. Prasad has taken initiative to prepare a complete multi purpose data base of students.
Asked why the union elections were not being held this month itself, officiating Registrar Sidnath Prasad Deen said that the university administration’s first priority was to put a fair and transparent admission process in place. Once the PG admission exercise is completed, the process for electoral roll preparation for the student union elections will be held.
Whether the university level elections would be held indirectly, the officiating Registrar said that the polls will be held at three levels. Besides college-level elections, poll for PG students' union will be held, said Prof Deen. College level and PG level elections will be held in direct mode. In all likelihood, the Central election to elect university level Student union office bearers will be conducted in indirect mode. A final call on the issue of central union election will be taken by the VC, said the registrar.

Though the final figures have not been released, about one lakh students enrolled in the constituent and affiliated colleges and the headquarter based PG depts will be eligible to exercise their franchise in the students' union elections.
Perwez Alam, member of the state executive of the All India Students Federation said that direct elections for the university level students' union office bearers should be held as it was more democratic. The system of university representatives electing the central office bearers was flawed and prone to malpractices, said the AISF leader.
