BIHARSHARIF: A sarpanch was shot dead at a village in Nalanda district late on Tuesday evening.
Chiksohra police station SHO Prakash Lal said the Makrota panchayat sarpanch, Subhash Yadav, was shot in the head while he was sleeping alone at his home in Kamarthu village.
The police officer said the relatives of the deceased informed the police around 6 in the morning on Wednesday, when they found him lying on his bed in a pool of blood.
“The relatives of the deceased accused a villager of killing him due to an old enmity. We will begin proper investigation after the relatives of the deceased lodge an FIR,” the SHO added.
This was the third murder in the district within 48 hours.
On Monday night a woman was found hanging from the ceiling of her marital home at Satyarganj village in Islampur. Her family members alleged it was a dowry death. In another incident, a man allegedly poisoned his wife at her father’s place at village Koray in Deepnagar early on Monday.
When asked about the spurt in crime in the district, Nalanda SP Nilesh Kumar said, “It is unfortunate that some cases of murders and some other crimes were reported in the last few days,” but added that no “organized crime” was reported from anywhere in the district.

He further said that the murder of the sarpanch was reportedly due to a personal animosity with a person from the same village. He added that the police have detained two people for interrogation in this regard.
The senior police officer said that a few of the recent murder cases are going to be resolved soon as their investigations are in the final stages of completion.
He added that no incidents of crime were reported either during the Rajgir Mahotsav and golden jubilee celebrations of World Peace Pagoda held in Rajgir recently.
