MALDA: A local man has been arrested for strangling and burning the body of a 25-year-old woman, whose charred remains were found in a mango orchard in Malda’s English Bazar a week ago.
Police said Chhoton Ghosh, 30, had an extra-marital affair with the victim, a divorced mother of two, and wanted to end the relationship. The post-mortem report does not mention rape, police added.

The victim was identified by her mother on Wednesday. She saw social-media posts of the body, charred and difficult to recognise, and suspected it was that of her daughter who was missing since December 2.
The mother contacted New Jalpaiguri (NJP) police station, where she had earlier lodged a missing diary. Police escorted her to Malda, where she identified the body as her daughter’s. Breaking down in the morgue, the mother said: “I want her murderers to be killed in the same way.”
Ghosh, a resident of Malda’s Shahjahanpur — barely a kilometre from Tipajani where the body was found — and the victim used to work in a popcorn factory in Siliguri. He left the job but the pair remained in a relationship for over two years, leading to discord between Ghosh and his wife.
The victim, who was pressing Ghosh to marry her, left Siliguri for Malda on December 2, her friend and neighbour said. “I last spoke to her when she was on the train,” the friend said.

Malda SP Alok Rajoria said: “The victim had visited Malda earlier in connection with the affair. But her insistence on marriage was too much for Ghosh. This finally led Ghosh to murder the woman and burn her body to hide her identity. We have also detained Ghosh’s wife for interrogation; she confirmed our suspicion. We will produce the accused in court on Thursday and seek 14 days’ police custody.”
The officer observed that more people might be involved in the murder and burning.
