Burnley boss Sean Dyche was delighted to see his side return to winning ways as Chris Wood's header secured a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

The first half was low on quality and chances but the game came alive after the break and Wood's crashing header from a delightful Ashley Westwood corner proved enough to settle the game.

Dyche felt Andy Carroll could have been sent off for an elbow on Ben Mee, something Steve Bruce disagreed with, while the Magpies boss was hugely critical of referee Tim Robinson who was officiating in his first Premier League match.

On the balance of play Burnley deserved the points with the visitors failing to land a shot on target in the 90 minutes, the first time that has happened against the Clarets in a Premier League match.

And Dyche was pleased with the reaction, resilience and clean sheet in the Turf Moor win.

Here's what the Clarets chief had to say on a return to a winning ways.

A game where you were able to grind out the result?

Chris Wood scores

"I think it was a tight game, we all saw that. We probably expected it to be because they play that way where they do keep it tight and they’ve done that very well over the last few weeks.

"After a tricky start they’ve performed very well the last four or five games and got good points on the table.

"But I was most pleased with our reaction. We’ve had a tough week and then people start making noises about it, and that can affect players, but it didn’t look like it.

"I thought there was a clear-mindedness to the performance. When we needed to play, we did, when we needed to affect the game, we did, and then we were very resolute.

“Defensively it was a very resolute performance as well. If you get those things right, you’ve got a chance of coming out on top of the tight margins and we did that."

What did you make of the game?

"It was a game of few high quality chances and we thought it might like that because that is how their results have been.

"They are very organised, hard to break down and have some good players.

"They have had a couple of injuries and we have had a spell of injuries, which is not helpful either. We had two back today and we are hopeful that people will be back fit for next week, we will find out more in the week.

"When all the bodies come back fit then all of a sudden it looks different.

"That one win makes a difference, we have 21 points and I think at this stage we had 11 or 12, so it is a big shift. People talked about bad runs and trust me last season was a bad run, this is not.

How important was the clean sheet?

"It was needed. The margins are often tight and we are always a work in progress.

"We are not throwing money at it and always bringing players in. It is little edges and increments and constant development.

"It comes down to the players, their knowhow in the Premier League and how they keep getting more and more experience in it. I liked their calmness today.

"It can be hard because people start writing and mentioning about tough runs and bad runs but there was a calmness to the performance and I was really pleased.

"I thought we delivered a good performance knowing it was an important game because we have had a tough run.

"They handled that and got on the right side of the margins to go and deliver and win a game and that is important over a season."
