Manchester United great Gary Neville has explained the transfer business which can make his former team competitive at home and abroad moving forward.

Neville feels that two huge performances during wins over Tottenham and Manchester City in the Premier League in recent weeks have solidified Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's position as manager.

The former United defender believes that the Reds are not far away from getting back to the type of level which will allow them to push on and compete at the top end of the Premier League regularly.

But before that point, he insists a specific amount of transfer business must be done before then.

"It is about consistency, the glass was half empty before the Tottenham game, even for me I was worried about what the next four days might bring for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, for the players, how they could become demoralised. When you're trying to persist with young players you get performances and results that are inconsistent and you can get a lot of criticism," Neville told Sky Sports.

"At this football club, the scrutiny is always going to be on you, you can't get away with it. Those two results were huge, not just for the manager but for the young players who needed a lift in their confidence.

"Now you're looking at the glass half-full. Chelsea are wobbling, Manchester United can get close. They now look like they are only three or four players from becoming a really good side because some of the performances we've seen in the last couple of weeks, it takes a lot to do what they did at City last Saturday."
