PATNA: An RJD youth wing functionary was shot at and critically injured by bike-borne criminals during morning walk in Gopalganj district on Sunday morning. The injured Ranjeet alias Munna Srivastava has been referred to a hospital in Gorakhpur for treatment.
Police said the incident took place around 5.30am when Munna, the district general secretary of RJD youth wing, had gone for morning stroll on Thawe Station Road from his Videshi Tola residence.
Three youths riding a motorbike accosted him and fired four bullets on him. One of the bullets hit him in his chest.
The assailants, who were in the age group of 20-25 years, escaped on their bike after the incident. The injured was rushed to Gopalganj Sadar hospital by local residents who were present on the spot. Later, he was referred to Gorakhpur in serious condition.
Gopalganj SP Manoj Kumar Tiwari said a police team has been sent to Gorakhpur to record Munna’s statement. A special investigation team (SIT) headed by a DSP-rank officer has been set up to crack the case at the earliest and nab the criminals involved in the murderous attack on the political party worker.
“The SIT members are already on their job. We hope to nab the assailants at the earliest. The police have collected some vital clue in the case. The attackers will be apprehended soon,” the SP said, adding that the incident is prima facie stated to be the fallout of dispute over property deal.
Gopalganj RJD district president Riyazul Haq Raju condemned the murderous attack on Munna and said law and order has virtually collapsed with criminals ruling the roost in the state. “There is lawlessness all around,” he told this newspaper.
The RJD district president said unidentified criminals had demanded Rs10 lakh as extortion from a jeweller Mohan Soni about three weeks ago and threatened him with dire consequences if extortion money was not paid. The police, however, claimed that three persons involved in the crime were arrested.
