Qatar- Katara becomes beacon of World Cultures and Heritage


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) has continued its efforts in spreading the Qatari culture and introducing the world's cultures, through a variety activities and events held throughout this year, in different areas of arts and heritage of Qatar and other parts of the world. Katara has become a cultural and artistic beacon in Doha.

The programs Katara presented through the year have varied between training courses, exhibitions, workshops, various lyrical performances and international theatres. The local side had a great role in attracting visitors, whether citizens or residents, through festivals and events.

Katara also hosted many important and varied forums, among which were in the fields of land and marine folklore of Qatar and the Gulf region, arts and songs, folk traditions, customs, traditions, folklore, traditional industries, handicrafts and folk culture.

The Cultural Village Foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Qatari American Institute in Washington, with the aim of strengthening cooperation relations between the two sides in the fields of culture and knowledge exchange as well as social and scientific activities. 

In the context of its keen attention to the Qatari and Gulf heritage and on reviving traditions related to marine life, the Cultural Village Foundation held the 9th Katara Annual Traditional Dhow Festival with a large participation representing 11 countries. The festival presented a number of diverse activities of heritage, educational, and entertaining nature.

Moreover, The Cultural Village Foundation organized the fifth edition of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel, which recorded an unprecedented increase in the number of participants in different categories, as the number of participants reached 1850.

It also organized the third edition of the Katara Prize for Quran Recitation, which aims to encourage distinguished talents in reciting the Holy Quran, discover and support talented people and present them to the world, honour the distinguished and creative readers, and motivate the younger generations to adhere to their religion. The Foundation also held the fourth edition to the Katara Prize for the Prophet's Poets. It also launched a new prize for young female writers.

Katara also witnessed many festivals, including the 3rd edition of 'Mahaseel festival of Qatari farm products; the 3rd edition of Cultural Diversity Festival; the 1st edition of Katara Exhibition for Kahraman Beads; Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition (S-hail) 2019, the 8th edition of Halal Qatar Festival and the 3rd edition of the Oud Festival.

Art and art exhibitions have a big role in attracting visitors, citizens and residents. Various arts activities were organized Qatar Society for Photography, the Department of Visual Arts, the Katara Center for Art and Katara Studios. Numerous activities were held with the participation of a lineup of Qatari, Gulf and foreign artists and photographers.

Katara was also very keen on organizing a number of competitions including the 8th edition of the the pearl diving and fishing ‘Senyar Festival' and the 3rd edition of Katara's GCC Al Nahma Prize.

Katara also hosted the 7th edition of the ‘International Opera and Classical Music Awards' on Katara's Amphitheatre, and the 6th Katara European Jazz Festival.

In the same context, Katara Opera House witnessed a diverse series of artistic performances, as it hosted Qatar-India 2019 Year of Culture ‘and the Bangladesh Festival Qatar 2019 to introduce Bangladesh's heritage and arts, as well as the Palestine Cultural Festival.

During the year 2019, Katara received more than 8 million visitors in addition to many tourist groups.
