LUCKNOW: A group of 150 students dispersing after a peaceful protest on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act pelted stones at a car under Dakkhin Tola police station area of Mau district on Monday evening following which the police had to use force to quell the unruly mob.
Mau DM Gyan Tripathi said internet services have been suspended in the area to stop rumour mongering.

The Mau district administration and the police claimed that the situation was under control. Six companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and additional force from the neighbouring districts including, Azamgarh and Ballia, has been dispatched immediately as a measure to keep a check on the law and order situation in the town.
Narrating the sequence of events, ADGP (Varanasi Zone) Braj Bhushan told TOI that a group of 150 students had assembled at Sadar crossing to protest against the citizenship act in the evening. Later, while the students were dispersing, somebody from the group hurled a stone at a car. “Seeing a car surrounded by a mob, the police personnel persent at the spot tried to dispel mob using mild lathi-charge. However, students retaliated by pelting stones at the cops,” added Bhushan.
The senior officers were informed about the development and immediately force from six other police stations were rushed to control the situation.
Till the time the reinforcement arrived, the mob had chased away the cops and also set afire three motorbikes parked outside the Dakkhin Tola police station. The policemen then resorted to firing tear gas shells and also cane-charged the protesters.
The ADG, however, clarified that no curfew has been imposed in the district while the DM and the SP were on the spot to supervise the operations.
