Three students from Telangana drown in Nashik waterfall
Three students of an agriculture college in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, allegedly drowned in the Dugarwadi waterfall near Trimbakeshwar, about 40km from Nashik city, on Tuesday night. All three were from Telangana.
Trimbakeshwar tehsildar Deepak Girase said the students — Anusha (21), Raghuvanshi (21) and Koti Reddy (20) — had gone missing since Tuesday night.
Their bodies were recovered late on Wednesday night by a rescue team comprising volunteers from a Nashik-based trekking organization, the police and villagers.
Police said six students of the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Shikshan Sanstha’s College of Agriculture, Aurangabad, had come to Nashik on a motorcycle expedition and reached Trimbakeshwar on Tuesday evening.
Girase said the students, including two girls, went to the cliff which descends to the waterfall 70 feet below. The three who drowned decided to climb down to the waterfall while the other three — Giridhar Akash, Vyankatesh Reddy and Kavya Shetty — were against it and wanted to return to their hotel in Nashik city. Koti Reddy had been to the waterfall twice in the past and said he would get Anusha and Raghuvanshi back to the hotel later.
However, when the three did not turn up till late in the evening, their colleagues tried to contact them, but their mobile phones were out of range. The colleagues went to the village near the waterfall in search of them. When they could not find them, they went back to the hotel at night.
The next morning, they took the help of villagers and descended to the waterfall. On the way down, they found Anusha’s broken slippers. The waterfall had dried up, but it had a deep pool at the base.
The villagers spotted Anusha’s body floating in the water around 10am. The police arrived there, and her body was fished out by noon. The volunteers were about to give up their search by 5.30pm as it was beginning to grow dark when they spotted the other two bodies too.
