RAMPUR: A 27-year-old man died while at least five civilians and a dozen policemen sustained injuries after violent protests broke out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Rampur on Saturday.
Police resorted to firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters near Hathikhana crossing when the agitating crowd went out of control. The protesters reportedly went on a rampage and vandalised a police jeep and torched another one.
They also set ablaze a few bikes and damaged public property.
The deceased was identified as Faiz Khan. Khan’s body has been sent to Moradabad for post-mortem.
ADG Avinash Chandra visited the district to take stock of the situation and called for extra force, which included PAC.
Officials believe that violence erupted after some protesters from other districts joined the Rampur agitation. Police are now verifying video recordings to identify violent protesters.
According to sources, people of minority community started gathering at Eidgah when the police stopped a large group of around 1,000 protesters near Hathikhana as section 144 was imposed in the district. However, some of them started pelting stones at police and even “opened fire”.
