BELAGAVI: Camp Police in Belagavi on Friday arrested a man who had been posing as an officer of the Indian Army, and had swindled many youngsters under the pretext of helping them get jobs in the armed forces.
Police said that Sagar Patil, a resident of Khanapur, took a sum of Rs 1.1 lakh from a youngster in October. “When this youngster did not hear from Patil for nearly two months, he realised that he had been defrauded, and filed a complaint with us,” said a cop, adding that the complainant had sought anonymity.
Belagavi city police commissioner BS Lokeshkumar told STOI that they had managed to nab Patil with the assistance of Military Police.”Patil frequented grounds where he knew youngsters gathered to exercise.
He also visited recruitment rallies of the army, and started to target them by pretending to be an officer who could get them a job in the force. We have learnt that he has swindled at least ten youngsters across the district,” Lokeshkumar said.
Cops recovered as many as 52 counterfeit documents, besides fake Army uniforms, medals and bulletproof jackets from Patil.
