PATNA: A 25-year-old man, Aklu Yadav, was lynched by a mob when he was trying to flee after shooting at a former mukhiya, Pawan Kumar Yadav, near Madhua Chowk under the Basopatti police station area in Madhubani district on Sunday.
The incident took place around 8.30am when the former mukhiya was sitting at a tea stall. Two motorcycle-borne men reached the spot and pumped four bullets into the ex-mukhiya’s body.
He was rushed to the local government hospital where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.
Supporters of the former mukhiya chased the assailants and caught one of them. The accused was thrashed in full public view by an angry mob. Police said Aklu, a resident of Bisaul village under the Harlakhi police station area in Madhubani district, died on the spot. However, his associate managed to escape. Four empty cartridges were recovered from the spot.
Madhubani SP Satya Prakash said eight people, including Aklu, have been named in the FIR in connection with the former mukhiya’s murder. A separate FIR was also lodged against unknown people for lynching Aklu.
“Pawan had earlier survived a murderous attack on him by Deo Narain Yadav alias Jaam Yadav and two of his associates. While two of the accused were arrested, Deo Narain is still at large,” the SP added. Aklu, according to sources, is a close relative of Deo Narain.
Jaynagar SDPO Sumit Kumar said Deo Narain had escaped to Nepal after the murderous attack on the former mukhiya about six months ago. Dispute over a plot of land is believed to be the reason behind the killing of the former mukhiya,” the SP said, adding raids were on to arrest the criminals involved in the murder.
SHO of Basopatti police station Inder Yadav said Aklu was caught by the mob while he was trying to flee to his in-laws’ house at Pachratan village, a stone’s throw distance from the spot.
