NASHIK: The section of the Nashik-Pune highway that passes through the Sangamner taluka has become more accident-prone since last year.
This year, till December 24, 60 people were killed in 117 accidents here against 45 fatalities from 71 accidents last year.
On Tuesday, a four-year-old child and a woman were killed when the car they were travelling in overturned on the bridge over Pravara river near Sangamner.
Four other women and girls in the car survived, but with grievous injuries. The deceased have been identified as Gitali Darandale (32) and Shamika Jagdale (4) — both residents of Wagholi in Pune.
The Nashik-Pune highway passing through Sangamner taluka measures more than 64 km — from Karheghat to Alekhind.
As per the highway police, most of the accidents have taken place due to overspeeding and other traffic rule violations, including driving on the wrong side.
The highway police said that last year, of the 71 accidents, 43 were fatal, which claimed the lives of 45 people. This year, till December 24, the number of road accidents on the 64-km stretch has swelled to 117, out of which, 56 have been fatal with 60 deaths.
They said the highway authorities have not been taking the necessary precautionary measures at dark spots on the highway though toll is being collected from motorists. They added that most of the accidents were taking place at the Ambi Khalsa Phata near Sangamner.

On the demand from motorists and local residents, speed breakers were put on the highway near the Ambi Khalsa Phata. However, motorists often fail to gauge the speed breakers and, therefore, accidents have become routine here.
There is also a demand to reduce the height of the speed-breakers. However, the highway authorities have not considered the demand.
The Nashik-Pune highway witnesses a continuous flow of devotees walking on foot towards Shirdi, Dehu and Alandi. Local residents have been appealing to the highway authorities to take appropriate measures keeping in mind the rush of devotees.
