BAREILLY: A sub-inspector posted with Bareilly police and two others were on Tuesday booked for allegedly raping a woman and thrashing her husband at a police outpost in Baheri area in August. The case was registered after over three months, following the chief judicial magistrate's order.
On August 23, a complaint in this connection was lodged by the woman, but police allegedly refused to book their officer, suspecting a foul play since the husband of the complainant and her two other relatives were detained by sub-inspector Arun Kumar for questioning while probing the missing complaint of an 18-year-old girl lodged by her father in June.
A relative of the woman’s husband was suspected to have eloped with the girl, said police.
SI Kumar was posted at Katai police outpost when the father lodged a missing complaint of his daughter, accusing a youth and his family members of her abduction.
Police claimed to have maintained all details in their general dairy. The case is, now, being investigated by Baheri police station SHO Ram Avtaar Singh.
Speaking with TOI, the SI said, “Recovery of the girl was important and the complainant’s husband was one of the suspects. He was also found missing from his house since the day the girl was abducted. We only questioned him at the police outpost and sought his help in recovering the girl. We were performing our duty and did not misbehave with anyone. So, the complaint lodged by the woman was an act of vengeance, because two of the girl’s relatives are also named in the complaint. The matter was brought to the knowledge of all senior police officers as family members of the girl approached police brass in Lucknow. The girl, however, finally appeared before the high court and expressed her desire to live with the youth with whom she had eloped.”

“I respect the court’s order, and I am open to any sort of investigation,” added the SI.
SSP Shailesh Pandey said, “An FIR was registered against the SI and two others following the CJM order. The case is being investigated by the Baheri SHO, who will submit his report, soon.”
When contacted the SHO to know about the investigation, he told TOI, “Prima facie, the complainant has concealed several facts about the entire incident from the court. Initially, she did not approach us for registering a complainant. We have also checked all our records and she never lodged a complaint. We have booked the SI and two cousins of the girl, who had eloped with a relative of the complainant. The complainant will be sent for a medical examination and her statement will be recorded. We will soon share the investigation report with the court.”
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
