NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Thursday reserved its order on the bail plea of nine men arrested in connection with Daryaganj protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Opposing the plea, Delhi Police submitted that some of the witnesses had seen these men at the scene of crime.
Additional sessions judge Satish Kumar is likely to pass an order on Saturday.
The court will also hear arguments on the bail plea of six others arrested in the case on the same day.
The prosecutor appearing for Delhi Police argued that police had 19 witnesses to support its claim. The lawyer added that according to an eyewitness, these men were present at the place of the incident from where they were eventually picked up. With respect to one of the accused, the court asked the police to verify his address and other details.
A magisterial court had dismissed the bail plea of 15 men on December 23 observing that such incidents created “panic” in the society. Of these 15 men, nine filed a petition in a Delhi court.
The magisterial court’s rejection order highlighted that the accused were even involved in damaging of barricades during the incident, therefore, invoking of provisions of Damage to Public Property Act was, prima facie, justified. The court had noted that many police officers suffered injuries in the incident and added that, the manner in which the incident took place, revealed that the accused persons were driven by a common objective.
