PATNA/ARA/BUXAR: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday launched altogether 242 development projects worth Rs 661 crore during a ‘Jagrukta Sammelan’ at Unwas village under Itarhi block of Buxar district. The programme was organised as part of the fourth leg of the CM’s ‘Jal-Jivan-Hariyali Yatra’ to create awareness about water conservation and afforestation.
Unwas is the birthplace of renowned Hindi writer and editor Shivpujan Sahay.
The CM also unveiled a bust of Sahay during his visit to the village.
Addressing the Sammelan, Nitish thanked the Buxar district administration for selecting Sahay’s village as the venue of his meeting. “I feel honoured visiting the native village of Sahay who was a great writer and journalist of his time. Coming generations will remember Sahay for his great works. I too got an opportunity to read his books in my young age. Something special shall be done for Sahay to remember his contributions to the fields of literature, language and society as a whole,” Nitish said amid applause from the audience.
“When I started my ‘Nyay Yatra’ in 2005, I had told people that I would do development with justice. I am trying my best to execute development work across the state with the same commitment to ‘development with justice’. Nobody is being left unattended,” he added.
He said special attempts were being made to bring people on the margins of society in the mainstream. Several schemes are being run for uplift of SC, ST, extremely backward classes, women and minorities apart from construction of roads, bridges and culverts at a faster pace, the CM said.
Nitish recounted his interaction with Bill Gates in Patna on November 17 this year during which he informed Gates about the ‘Jal-Jivan-Hariyali Abhiyan’. “After returning from Patna, he (Gates) praised the work being done in Bihar to minimize the impact of climate change. Bill Gates said the works being done in Bihar under the Jal-Jivan-Hariyali Abhiyan will be discussed throughout the country,” the CM said.

The CM called upon people to show their commitment by participating in a proposed “human chain” scheduled to be formed on January 19 next year alongside every important road in Bihar in support of total prohibition, de-addiction and climate change and against the practices of dowry and child marriage.
“You should show your commitment during the next human chain by holding each other’s hand from 11.30 am to 12 noon on January 19,” CM said.
Earlier, the CM visited Bhendari village under Ichri panchayat in Bhojpur district in the course of his yatra. The CM reviewed Gerbera flowers cultivation done according to the polyhouse farming system under which crops are grown under controlled temperature and humidity with the help of an automated system.
This flower cultivation has been put into practice by a 66-year old woman farmer Kanti Kiran under the CM’s gardening mission on a 2,000 sqm area with government subsidy. The CM appeared impressed with this highly profitable and employment-generating cultivation method and spoke to her about it.
The CM also inspected a drip-irrigation system for growing guava and vegetables apart from other initiatives. He also handed over cheques worth Rs 25 crore to 975 self-help groups and cheques worth Rs 1 crore and 52 lakh to 445 beneficiaries under the sustainable livelihood program. The CM also distributed vehicles to 60 beneficiaries.
Bhojpur DM Roshan Kushwaha, Bhojpur SP in-charge Sudhir Kumar Porik, Chief secretary Deepak Kumar, DGP Gupteshwar Pandey, backward classes welfare minister Vinod Kumar Singh and other officials were also present along with the chief minister.
