NIZAMABAD: While the struggle of turmeric farmers from Nizamabad is yet to bear fruit in the form of a turmeric board or increased minimum support price (MSP), they are faced with yet another worry this season. Sources say that farmers and traders are a distressed lot as the crop has failed to fetch high rates this season, when turmeric is not available.
Turmeric is a seasonal crop and is not produced from October to December.
Due to the limited stock, the crop generally fetches farmers and traders Rs 10,000 per quintal. “The prices have not increased this time around owing to the lack of demand. Those who stored turmeric in cold storages are getting only Rs 4,000 per quintal as usual,” said K Sai Reddy, a farmer from Jakranpalli.

Another cause for concern is that when the produce will begin to hit the market from January, the prices would continue to be low. Farmers have been demanding Rs 14,000 per quintal, whereas the current price is around Rs 4,000, depending on the quality of the produce.
In view of the low demand and prices, Nizamabad Agriculture Market Committee officials launched a publicity campaign to create awareness among turmeric farmers over the need to bring dried turmeric to the market to obtain a good price for their produce. The turmeric season begins in January and Nizamabad market is preferred by farmers from surrounding districts. “Usually, farmers find it difficult to sell turmeric because of its high moisture content. Officials are touring three districts to spread awareness on handling the produce,” said a source.
