PUNE: Farmers from Beed have finally started to get their insurance dues for the 2018 kharif season after two rounds of protest.
The Oriental Insurance Company has also started to iron out the massive flaws in data, most of which were introduced during the enrolment process.
An insurance company official said over 7,500 farmers have been paid Rs16 crore worth of claims in the past two weeks.
The company estimates that it has, so far, paid Rs30 crore worth of claims in the past four months.
“What has changed is the clarification from the Centre. The government has told us that genuine farmers should not suffer because of minor mistakes in the documents,” PS Murthy, deputy general manager, Oriental Insurance, said.
He said over 1.07 lakh farmers had applied for claims and Rs 200 crore worth of claims have been filed by the farmers, pertaining to the 2018 kharif season.
As per the government, as against the normal practice of area correction factor (which allows for a standard deduction), the company must go into each case. This, Murthy said, was taking time but the company would scrutinise most of the claim documents within a month.
“We are monitoring the payouts and will return for protest after January 20, 2020, if the last eligible farmer is not paid,” said a member of the All India Kisan Sabha, a farmers’ group.
