Residents of Sai Krupa Colony, Sri Devi Kalyan Estates, and Bajrang Nagar Colony say that stray dogs have been roaming in packs and there numbers seem to be increasing in the area.

“There are around 15 dogs on street no 3 in Sai Krupa Colony alone and it will be difficult for pedestrians to move around if their population increases further,” said R Richard, a resident of Sai Krupa Colony.
Many blame the civic authority for not conducting regular drives to carry out sterilisation drives in Yapral colonies. Animal activists also opine that regular sterilisation drives can control the population of Indies.

“Recently, a lot of dogs from the Yapral and Alwal areas were relocated towards Ammuguda railway lines. Since November was a mating season, the dog population may have increased. Residents need to understand that it is only through sterlisation drives that the problem can be addressed,” said Aanchal Khanna, an animal rights activist, adding that relocation of dogs is not a solution.
Officials admit that they have indeed received complaints from Yapral and Alwal circle over rising number of stray dogs. “We tried to resolve few grievances on Monday pertaining to Yapral area. However, there are 20 more complaints over the same issue. Since a part of Yapral also falls under the Secunderabad Cantonment Board, there is a jurisdication issue,” admitted T Srinivas Reddy, assistant director, veterinary wing, GHMC (north zone), adding that majority dogs have relocated from Jawaharnagar dumpyward towards Alwal and Yapral areas.
While the GHMC has 17 vehicles for catching stray dogs for sterilisation, vaccination and deworming purposes, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) does not have a veterinary wing of its own.
The SCB relies on the GHMC’s veterinary wing to address issues pertaining to dogs, pigs or monkeys.
