BENGALURU: The state government is learnt to have set in motion an exercise to examine if Ramanagara district, south of Bengaluru, can be renamed Nava (New) Bengaluru. According to sources, officials from industries department in consultation with Ramanagara district administration have raised the demand.
The government is yet to take a call. When asked about the speculation on Saturday, chief minister BS Yediyurappa did not respond.

Industries department sources said Bengaluru as a brand holds great value in terms of attracting investments but unfortunately the city has reached its saturation point because of non-availability of land.
The city is investors’ favourite destination in Karnataka. In 2018-19, for instance, Bengaluru got 70% of the total investment in Karnataka. It is also among the largest technology clusters in the world.
What makes the city more conducive to IT sector growth is its strong regulatory environment for business and globally competitive talent pool. “Renaming of Ramanagara as Nava Bengaluru will naturally attract more investments,” said a senior officer privy to the information.
In 2007, Ramanagara district was carved out of the erstwhile Bengaluru Rural district comprising Ramanagara, Channapatna, Kanakapura and Magadi taluks when HD Kumarswamy, who represented Ramanagara assembly constituency, was the chief minister. Then people had demanded the new district be named Bengaluru South but it wasn’t considered for historical reasons.
