MALDA: The body of a woman in her early 20s was discovered in a mango orchard in Kamalpur village on Saturday. Her clothing was torn, leading villagers to suspect that she had been raped before being murdered.
Bridal clothes and used condoms were found at the spot. A force from Manik chak police station reached the orchard around 9.30am. SP Alok Rajoria, who went to the crime scene, said the victim had been identified as a resident of Kishanganj.
“We got a marriage certificate from her belongings.”
Md Salenur, a villager, said: “The girl is not from this locality. We want punishment for the culprit.”
Police said they had zeroed in on the main suspect, who is a local, but no arrests had been made. A senior officer said: “We are not sure whether there was rape or consensual intercourse before the murder. A post-mortem will reveal this.”
The crime comes a month after a woman’s charred body was found in Malda.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
