Member of first Lok Sabha and last Maharaja of Dumraon estate, Kamal Singh passes away in Bihar's Buxar
PATNA: A member of the country’s first Lok Sabha and last Maharaja of the erstwhile Dumraon Raj (a Zamindari Estate) Kamal Singh died on Sunday morning at his residence at Dumraon town in Bihar’s Buxar district, about 110km west from the state capital here. A family member said he was 94.
Singh was elected to the first and the second Lok Sabha in 1952 and 1957 as an independent candidate from Buxar constituency.
He contested Lok Sabha election again in 1989 and 1991 as the BJP candidate from Buxar seat but lost to the CPI’s Tej Narayan Yadav in both the polls.
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and several other politicians expressed grief over demise of Singh. Expressing his profound grief over Singh’s demise, Nitish Kumar announced that formerMP would be cremated with full state honour. Singh’s family members said, he would be cremated on the bank of Ganga river at Buxar on Monday.
In his condolence message, Bihar CM said Singh had played a key role in developing education and health sector in his area.“A golden and glorious era has come to an end with Singh’s demise. He had donated his land and resources for the development of education and health sectors. His death has caused irreparable loss in the fields of politics and society,” Nitish said.
Bihar deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi and present Buxar MP Ashwini Kumar Choubey also expressed their profound grief over death of Singh.
