Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night after masked thugs armed with sticks and rods attacked students, teachers and damaged the campus property, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march.

NEW DELHI: Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night after masked thugs armed with sticks and rods attacked students, teachers and damaged the campus property, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march.
More than 30 people, including JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.

Massive deployment of security personnel remained in place on Monday at JNU, with authorities only allowing students with valid ID cards inside the campus which had witnessed violence.
According to sources, security was deployed outside the hostels, administration block and other important locations.
Here's how India Inc reacted on violence at JNU campus by masked mob:
Anand Mahindra, chairman Mahindra Group, tweeted: "It doesn't matter what your politics are. It doesn't matter what your ideology is. It doesn't matter what your faith is. If you're an Indian, you cannot tolerate armed, lawless goons. Those who invaded JNU tonight must be traced & hunted down swiftly & given no quarter..."

Retweeting a video related to the violence at the JNU campus, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, chairperson and managing director, Biocon stated: "This is unpardonable. Violence cannot be condoned."

Marico chairman: "Coming from the land of non-violence, it’s unbecoming of us to witness and encourage these acts of violence. Extremely hurt seeing last evening’s news ."

Chairman of RPG Enterprises, Harsh Goenka, tweeted: "Hearing me pray for Australia, for its people, for its 500 million animals that have died since the #bushfires, my little one asked why are you not praying for India where there are religious bushfires lit all over the country and students being attacked mercilessly?"

Reacting to the intense situation, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the government "wants universities to be safe spaces for all students."
She tweeted: "Horrifying images from JNU — the place I know & remember was one for fierce debates & opinions but never violence. I unequivocally condemn the events of today. This govt, regardless of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students."
