BENGALURU: Cyient is expanding its development centre in Warangal (Telangana) to 800 employees, up from 200 currently, even as the engineering research and development company has cut jobs in the last year to combat a business slowdown.

The Warangal centre will be its largest in the area, the company said. “We are delighted to expand our footprint in Warangal, a city that has a rapidly evolving talent ecosystem. With the strong growth and momentum in our communications business, we look forward to leveraging our presence here to support customers globally,” Krishna Bodanapu, CEO of Cyient, said.

The centre supports telecom customers, a sector in which the company is still showing good growth. Cyient’s expansion in Warangal comes after it had cut about 70 jobs in the June quarter. In the September quarter, the company’s headcount was down by 185 sequentially.

Tier-II locations in states are seeing increased interest from companies looking to diversify out of major metros. “Warangal, traditionally being a hub for educational institutions with good social and medical infrastructure and road and rail connectivity with major cities across the country, fits well in the plans of the IT sector to spread its wings to tier-II cities,” said Manchala Srinivasa Rao, social and political analyst.
