PATNA: Sunday’s mob attack at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi has sparked an outrage in Patna with different student organizations staging protests against the violence.
A mob had allegedly barged into JNU on Sunday evening and attacked students and teachers with sticks and rods.
Representatives of the Jan Adhikar Chhatra Parishad sat on a dharna in front of the Wheeler Senate House of Patna University (PU) on Monday and shouted anti-BJP, RSS and ABVP slogans.
They were opposing the present government’s alleged repressive measures against JNU students, who had been agitating peacefully against the recent fee hike.
Incidentally, the newly-elected Patna University Students’ Union is also headed by Jan Adhikar Chhatra Parishad leader, Manish Yadav.
Another bunch of students, owing allegiance to the All India Students’ Association, also sat on a dharna at the same spot. Carrying placards, they raised slogans against the NDA government and demanded strict action against the “anti-social elements”, who had attacked innocent students and teachers. They also sought removal of JNU’s vice-chancellor, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar.
PU registrar Manoj Kumar Mishra told this newspaper, “The agitating students protested peacefully and did not damage any property of the university. However, police remained vigilant.”
