The BJP, which was in power in Nagpur for the last seven years suffered a jolt when it managed to get just 15 seats out of the 58. A surging Congress got 30 seats while its ally NCP got 10. The results were predictable considering that BJP had performed badly in the assembly polls in the Vidarbha region, where it won 29 seats out of the 62.
During the 2014 polls, the party had won 44 assembly seats.
BJP senior leaders such as Devendra Fadnavis and Nitin Gadkari had addressed rallies and attempts were made to correct the wrongs that were made during the assembly polls. However, BJP still suffered a loss. It has not fared well in the villages of Gadkari and Chandrashekar Bawankule. BJP managed to come to power in Dhule Zilla Parishad polls defeating the Congress. However, in regions such as Palghar, the Shiv Sena has emerged as the single largest party followed by NCP. Congress has done well in Nandurbar too where it has won 23 seats.
