MUZAFFARPUR: Muzaffarpur police arrested five impersonators while they were trying to extort money from a truck driver and others by posing themselves as police officials near Kachchi-Pakki Chowk under the Sadar police station area of the town here on Wednesday.
Police chased the impersonators for nearly 5km to nab them while they were trying to flee towards Motihari by hijacking the truck which was loaded with cattle.

“The impersonators posing as DSP and other police officers first demanded extortion from the driver, failing which, they got inside the truck and asked the driver to take it to the nearby police station. Later, the truck driver saw that next police station passed and the impersonators kept asking them to drive. After a while, the driver saw a police patrolling vehicle and raised an alarm for help, following which the police team chased the truck for around 5km and nabbed the impersonators,” Sadar police station SHO Mithilesh Kumar Jha said.
He added that all arrested persons were being quizzed. “They have revealed some vital information about their gang and modus operandi. The rest of the gang members will be arrested soon,” said SP (city) P K Mandal, adding that further investigation is on after lodging an FIR based on the statement of the driver under various sections of IPC related to kidnapping, loot and impersonating their identities to extort money.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, Md Khalil told police that he was going to Samastipur. “As soon as we reached near Kachchi-Pakki Chowk, some men, dressed in police uniform stopped us on the pretext of vehicle-checking drive. I produced all the documents related to the truck and my driving license. Later, they threatened to seize our truck claiming that the vehicle is loaded with illegal cattle. They also asked us to pay Rs 5 lakh fine for letting us go without any hassle. When I refused to pay the money, they took us on gun-point and asked me to drive the vehicle to the nearby police station,” he said.
