About 20 hit and run cases were reported in the city last year. Apart from these, two accidents occurred in the first week of 2020. In most cases, police have not been able to catch the accused mainly because of the absence of CCTV cameras on roads. The plans to launch a pan-city surveillance system have been pending since long. Officials need to expedite the project because it will not only help in catching criminals, but also act as a deterrent among offenders.

Vibhuti Khand sub-inspector Naresh Pal said, “The nature of injuries on the body indicates that the victim was either run over by a car or an SUV and dragged for a few metres. We are scanning CCTV camera footage on the route to identify the vehicle. The deceased worked in a tent house firm in Barabanki.”
On January 2, a 25-yearold biker was crushed to death by a speeding truck in Sarojininagar. Police are yet to seize the truck or arrest its driver.
