12-year-old Assam girl struck by arrow while practising archery

A 12-year-old girl practising archery was seriously injured when an arrow shot by afellow archer accidentally hit her at the Sports Association of India (SAI) training facility at Chabua in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Thursday. ​

DIBRUGARH: A 12-year-old girl practising archery was seriously injured when an arrow shot by a fellow archer accidentally hit her at the Sports Association of India (SAI) training facility at Chabua in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Thursday.
The girl, identified as Shivangi Gohain, was rushed to a private hospital in Dibrugarh where doctors failed to remove the arrow. She was later flown to AIIMS, New Delhi, where she will undergo a surgery.
Navajyoti Basumatary, secretary of the Archery Association of Assam, said, “The unfortunate incident took place at the SAI Extension Centre at Chabua. The young archer got injured during a regular practice session. At that time, there was nobody as the in-charge, AC Marcy, had gone for the Khelo India 2020 event in Guwahati.”
Shivangi, daughter of Birinchi Gohain of Chabua’s Deodhai village, has been practising archery since the age of nine. She has participated and won in a number of tournaments. Recently, she participated in the 65th National School Games Archery Championship organised by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.“The chief minister has assured all kind of help for her. She will be treated at the AIIMS. It was an unfortunate accident and we are praying for her early recovery,” said Birinchi.
